4 Apples

Another simple still life that sold in it's first show. I painted it on the largest single sheet of Arches 300lb rough I could find and still is one of my favs. I apologize for the quality of the slide/scan and the crop on the yellow apple. When I have time I will scan the transparency and get a proper image up. 4 Apples sold in Naples Florida but the couple who bought it have it in their upstate NY cottage. Up where their are plenty of apples to keep my 4 Apples company. The prints of 4 Apples sold well also, my wife framed an even bigger giclee hanging in our family room. When I started selling fine art full time I battled constantly with the desire to paint what I wanted and the need to paint what would sell or I knew would sell. Being out of the scene for 4-5 years now, I tell artists that want to try this for a living to paint what you want to paint and don't listen to family or patrons or shows. Ultimately if you are enjoying what you are creating it will show and people will love it for what it is, not the subject matter. Where you will run into trouble is when EVERYONE raves about a certain work and filled with this esteem boost and able to pay your bills and feed your kids, your mind starts saying, maybe I should do another painting like that one. It takes real control to get out of this mind set. Or try and find a place in the middle where you can stay passionate and still paint what people want to buy.
